Joseph Gates, born December 25, 1695 (Haddam record) or December 28, 1696 (East Haddam record). He married, January 8, 1718/9, Hannah Brainerd, daughter of Deacon Daniel and Susannah Brainerd of East Haddam. He was a Selectman in 1740 and 1741 and a farmer by occupation. He was usually called "Sergeant Joseph" and he was probably the Lieutenant Joseph Gates who served in the French and Indian War during the campaign of 1756. His wife joined the First Church, November 7, 1725 and he joined, March 7, 1730/1.

Joseph Gates suffered the loss of three young children in less than a week in 1740, followed by the death of a fourth child in 1742 and his wife's death on March 20, 1744. He died, November 1, 1770, in his 73rd year. They were buried in Cove Burial Ground.

3. Elizabeth, b. 12 Aug 1724, baptized 14 Nov 1725, m. Jonah Cone, b. 7 Mar 1721, son of Daniel and Mary (Barnes) Cone. She joined the Millington Church, 5 June 1748 and they were active members of the church for over fifty years. In 1762 he was appointed lieutenant in the 16th Company, 12th Regiment of the colonial militia and was promoted to captain in 1768. She died in Millington, 16 Sept 1802, age 78 and he died there, 24 July 1809.

5. Susannah, b. 24 Nov 1730, baptized 3 Jan 1730/1, d. in East Haddam, 25 May 1742.

6. Aaron (twin), b. 20 Oct 1733, baptized 28 Oct 1733, died in East Haddam, 14 Aug 1740.

7. Ann (twin), b. 20 Oct 1733, baptized 28 Oct 1733, died in East Haddam, 18 Aug 1740.

8. David, b. 18 Apr 1738, baptized 3 June, died, 12 Aug 1740, in East Haddam.
