Civil War Medal of Honor Recipient. He enlisted in the 148th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, and was mustered in as 1st Sergeant of Company K on September 7, 1862. After receiving promotions to 1st Lieutenant (November 15, 1863) and to Captain and company commander (July 31, 1864), he went on to perform a feat of bravery on October 27, 1864 during the Siege of Petersburg, Virginia, that would see him awarded the CMOH. His citation for that act reads "With 100 selected volunteers, Brown assaulted and captured the works of the enemy, together with a number of officers and men." In the charge, Captain Brown had men from various companies follow him as he led them under fire through first open land, then blockaded ditches that ringed Fort Crater. After reaching the Fort, he was the first of his men inside, and his command captured the position, was well as a number of Confederate officers and men. After an hour Captain Brown was forced to retreat and reliquish the fort while waiting for reenforcements that never came. When he asked about them to brigade commander General Nelson A. Miles, the officer who ordered the charge, he was informed that no reinforcements were planned because it was never believed that Captain Brown's men had a chance of succeeding. Jeremiah Brown led his men though the rest of the conflict, received a brevet of Major, US Volunteers on December 2, 1864 (backdated to his October 27, 1864 act of bravery), and was honorably mustered out on June 1, 1865. On June 22, 1896, almost thirty two years later, he was awarded his Medal. He was one of four 148th Pennsylvania Infantry soldiers to be awarded the Medal of Honor for bravery during the Civil War (the others being Private Robert W. Ammerman, Private George W. Harris, and Private Josiah Phillips).
