Willie was born in Beaufort and was educated at the Beaufort County Training School (Old Shanklin). As a young man, he joined Grace AME Church of Beaufort. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a heavy equipment operator for Beaufort County Roads and Bridges Department before retiring. He was married to Armietha Howard.

Willie "Sonny" Howard, 71, a retired heavy equipment operator for the Beaufort County Roads and Bridges Department, died Sunday in a Beaufort hospital. A wake service will be at 7 p.m. today in Marshel's Wright-Donaldson Funeral Home in Beaufort. The funeral will be at noon Friday in Word of Faith Outreach Ministry. Burial will be in Beaufort National Cemetery.

Mr. Howard was born in Beaufort, a son of Roosevelt Howard and Minnie Adkins Howard. He attended Beaufort County Training School. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of Grace AME Church in Beaufort.

Surviving are his wife, Armietha Howard; three daughters, Patricia Porter of Burton, Willie Mae Williams of Laurel Bay and Ronnie Brock of Alexandria, Va.; three stepsons, Leroy Speaks of Anderson, Charles Hampton of St. Helena Island and Joseph Hampton of Burton; four stepdaughters, Annette Carter and Barbara Jenkins, both of Burton, Sharon Summerour of Atlanta and Leslie Smalls of Lady's Island; three brothers, Norman Howard and Frank P. Howard, both of St. Helena Island, and Roosevelt Howard Jr. of Burton; a sister, Katherine Williams of San Diego; six grandchildren; 20 stepgrandchildren; and 15 step-great-grandchildren.
