SMITH SHOUSE IS KILLED
Knox City Man Dragged by Runaway Team Yesterday After Falling From Sled.
Smith Shouse, a well known farmer of near Knox City, was killed about 9:30 yesterday morning when he slipped and fell from a sled pulled by a team of horses, the team running away and dragging him for a considerable distance before they could be stopped. Mr. Shouse's leg was in some manner caught as he fell from the sled. He was dead when picked up. The leg and also his back was broken.
Mr. Shouse started to drive the team to a well some distance from the house. His son had gone on a little way ahead. Just how the accident happened is not known, but the ground was covered with the slick ice from the sleet which had fallen. It is believed he either slipped or became unbalanced and fell.
Mr. Shouse was born on Bee Ridge March [sic] 13 [sic], 1869, being about 70 years old. He was a son of James and Amy Shouse, early pioneers of that section, both of whom are dead. He was one of a family of eleven children, of whom only two are now living, a sister, Mrs. Elera Allensworth, of Edina, and a brother, Frank Shouse, of near Knox City.
He was married to Mrs. Maggie Boltz Gardner in September, 1897. Three children were born to them, who are: Minnie, now Mrs. Glenn Parrish, Knox City; Lyda, Mrs. Robert Rouse, Hurdland, and Roy, who lives neat the home place. Two children by a previous marriage are dead.
Funeral arrangements have not yet been made, awaiting the arrival of a step-daughter, Mrs. Bruce Mitchell of Minnesota.
