The second son of Felix Settle and Sarah Catlett "Sally" Smith. He learned the trade of gunsmithing from working in his father's gunship as did his brother Simon. He first made rifles on his own in Glasgow, Barren County and marked them " W.F. Settle Glasgow, Ky. and the date.
