He died from pneuumonia caught trying to ford the flooded Rivanna River in Nov 1779. He asked to be buried at Clover Fields cause l0 miles was too difficult to transport home during flood. He served without pay as a Minute Man considering this his patriotic duty. He was the 3rd signer of Albemarle Co. Declaration of Independence in 1779.
