Charles was the first of three children of Charlie and Bernice Thomas of Atlanta, Georgia. He was the brother of Gloria and Patsy. Charles' parents moved from Atlanta to Augusta, Georgia for a short period of time when Charles III was born, then the family moved back to Atlanta. Charles grew up at 545 Seal Place NE near Piedmont Park, and 1806 Alvarado Terrace, SW. Charles excelled at golf from a very young age. He graduated from Southwest Atlanta High School in 1955. He attended Georgia State College in Atlanta on a golf scholarship.
Charles had three children: Charles Glenn Thomas, Charles Mansfield Thomas IV, and Martha Bernice “Molly” Thomas (Moore).They lived at 333 Oak Drive SE and then 1390 Town & Country Dr. SE in Atlanta.
Charles worked as staff manager for Prudential Life Insurance in Decatur, Ga.
Charles died in December 1969 after a 15 month battle with leukemia. He was 32 years old.

Gravesite Details

Suffix "III" (the third) was left off the original grave marker in error. This marker remains at the foot of Charles’ grave. A new companion marker was installed in August 2020 after his wife Verlyn’s death.
