Helge Boes was a CIA agent who was killed during a live-fire training exercise in eastern Afghanistan when a grenade prematurely exploded. He was the second CIA officer to die in the line of duty in Afghanistan – the first being Johnny Spann in November 2001. In 1972 Helge's family moved to West Berlin where he attended John F. Kennedy School, a German-American bi-curricular grade and high school. In 1989, he graduated from John F. Kennedy and moved to Kennesaw, Georgia where he enrolled at Georgia State University. He graduated summa cum laude from GSU in 1992 and then enrolled at Harvard Law School. During the spring of 1997, he graduated cum laude from Harvard Law School. Helge worked as an attorney in private practice until he decided to join the CIA in January 2001 and worked as an operations officer in the Counter Terrorist Center. Helge leaves behind his wife, Cindy.
