A month from his 23rd birthday, Grafton enrolled on August 9th, 1862 with two of his brothers at Gosport, Indiana. They each would serve in the same Company B, 59th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry as Privates. He would see action with his unit in Mississippi at Island#10, Mississippi, and the Defense of Corinth, Jackson, Champion Hills and Vicksburg.

He was also at Missionary Ridge in Georgia. Like his brother Stephen he would contract measles at Memphis and suffer from chronic diarrhea from exposure to the wet cold conditions. He was discharged from service at Washington DC on May 30th, 1865.
