Dorothy Ruth Dyal Briscoe, 85, died on May 30, 2011. Ms. Briscoe was a long term resident of Great Oaks Assisted Living and a recent resident of Park Place Nursing Facility, both in Monroe. She was born Jan. 24, 1926 in her family home on Dyal Street in Baxley.
Dorothy Ruth was the daughter of the late James Edgar Dyal and the late Ruth Smith Dyal. She graduated from Wesleyan College in 1946, and later earned both a master's degree and a six years' degree from UGA. While a resident of Monroe, she was a member of Monroe Junior Service League. St. Alban's Episcopal Church and the Daughters' of the American Revolution. Mrs. Briscoe served on the first board of directors of the Monroe Golf and Country Club. While a resident in Monroe, she was employed by the Floyd County School System. She was preceded in death by her sister, Elizabeth Dyal Tinley and three brothers, James E. Dyal, Smith Dyal and Milton Dyal.
She was a loving mother to and is survived by her only son, Jack Dyal Briscoe, his wife, Patricia Sullivan Briscoe and three grandchildren, Daniel Jackson Briscoe, Kelly Dyal Briscoe and Davis Sullivan Briscoe, all of Monroe. She is also survived by loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
The body has been donated to the Emory School of Medicine.
Memorial services were held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, June 3 at Holy Cross Anglican Church in Loganville with the Retired Rev. Dr. Foley Beach officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Red Cross.
