James I. Stone was the son of Brig. General Samuel Stone and Sarah 'Sally' Ann Lane. He moved with his family to Putnam County, Indiana in the early 1850s. He married Sarah Agnes Williams, a native of Montgomery County, Kentucky, on March 17, 1864 in Russellville, Putnam County, Indiana. To that marriage was born at least six children: Anna, Edwin, Catherine ('Kate'), Samuel Valentine, Henry N. and James I. Stone, Jr.

He was a deputy sheriff in Putnam County in 1900, and lived in Greencastle, Indiana. In about 1901, he and his wife moved to California, to be near two of his children, Catherine Stone Mooney, and Henry N. Stone. After he died, Sarah moved back to Greencastle to live with their daughter, Anna, a single teacher, until Anna retired and also moved to the Los Angeles area in about 1915.
