I send this forget me not to your sprit, John P Van Ness. I was taught about you, every since my birth. I love you though I've never met you. You are in my heart always. One day bye & bye we will meet on that beautiful shore. Signed: Grand daughter of Eugene Montgomery Van Ness of the Washington DC branch of the family.

You are a very distant cousin of mine. I know that your brother William Van Ness was a second to Aaron Burr when he shot Alexander Hamilton in the duel in New Jersey in 1804. I also know that you were a son of Judge Peter Van Ness and his second wife Elbertje Hogeboom or Hoogenboom. I know that your father and mother were the first owners of Lindenwald in Kinderhook, Columbia County, New York and that Martin Van Buren was the second owner of the house. Strange to say, but Martin Van Buren was also a very distant cousin of mine along with his first cousin, once removed wife Hannah Hoes. I think that Martin Van Buren did an excellent job in getting the charges against your brother William Van Ness dismissed which let William eventually become a federal judge in New York City.
