He attended elementary school and high school in Canton, Mo. George joined the U.S. Army in June 1945 and was stationed in Italy until he returned in January 1947. He attended Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Mo., and worked at Caterpillar Inc. in East Peoria for 36 years.
George married M. Ruth Beezley on June 3, 1951, and is survived by his wife and children, Patricia R. Curtis and Bruce A. Curtis; his grandchildren, Eric and Beth Terpening and Rachel and Shannon Curtis; a brother, Omer Curtis; and one sister, Betty Hill.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Lois Curtis .
George was active in the Washington Recreation Association, coaching little league baseball, and Washington Jaycees. He was the first park superintendent of the Washington Park District. Under his guidance, cornfields and soybean fields were turned into parks that are enjoyed by all the residents of Washington. George donated his salary back to the park district, which helped pay for the construction of the ball field complex, George H. Curtis Field. He served on the park board for numerous years and helped guide the expansion of the park district. George coordinated and assisted in the donation of a large parcel of land by Caterpillar to the Washington Park District, which now contains a soccer field and ball field complex. After retiring, George devoted his time to traveling, golf, and developing his woodworking skills. George 's furniture fills his children's homes, and he built numerous other projects for his friends and church.
He was a member of Crossroads Methodist Church in Washington.
Cremation rites have been accorded. Entombment of the cremated remains will be at a later date in the church columbarium.
