George was the son of William & Susan Cummings Riley. He married Martha Jane Sapp, 27 Oct 1859, Shelby County, Illinois. They had fourteen children.

George W. Riley, whose wife died at the family home two miles south of Cowden, Illinois, last Thursday evening, himself passed away at 5:30 Monday evening, just four days later, having been at the point of death for some little time and in poor condition of health for several years. He was one of the early settlers of southern Shelby county, Illinois, and was 83 years old.

Mr. Riley was the father of Mrs. Alice Carpenter of this city (Shelbyville, Illinois), and is survived by three other daughters and two sons. These are Mrs. Harriet Sweezy, Mrs. Letitia Endsley, Mrs. Electa Flannigan(sic) and Everett Riley, living south of Cowden, Illinois, in Fayette county, and George Riley, Jr., of Cowden, Illinois. Mrs. Flannigan(sic) is now seriously ill with pneumonia at her father's home.

The funeral was held from the Methodist church at Holliday, Illinois, at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, with interment in the cemetery there.
