Patrick Bowen was born in Ireland, April 12, 1831, in the County Leitrim at Carrick-on-Shannon. He came to America seventy five years ago. He landed at New York City, where he was married, and soon afterward moved to Geneseo, Illinois, where he was road master on the Rock Island railroad until 1860, when he moved to Benton county, Iowa, where he farmed for many years. His nearest town then was Cedar Rapids. He afterward moved to Cherokee county, where he continued farming until the death of his wife about thirty eight years ago, when he moved to Rock Rapids and lived there about eight years. After that time he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. Margaret McGuire at Cavour, SD, until about sixteen years ago, since when he has made his permanent home in Logan county, North Dakota, with his daughter W. T. Murphy. Mr. Bowen was the father of ten children, five boys and five girls. Six of who survive to mourn his loss, three sons, James of Fargo, ND, Bernard of Flandreau, SD, and Thomas of Napoleon. The daughters are: Mrs. James Lynch, Cherokee, Mrs. Margaret McGuire, Timber Lake, SD, and W. T. Murphy, Napoleon, ND. Besides the children are thirty three grandchildren and forty great grandchildren, the eldest of these being Leagora Lynch of Cherokee, a young man of twenty four years of age. The funeral services were held at St. Philip Neri church at Napoleon Friday morning, January 16, by Rev. Fr. Fritz, pastor of the church. The remains were taken back to Cherokee, where services were held at St. Mary's church, conducted by the Rev. Masterson, and were laid to rest beside his wife at the Catholic cemetery in Cherokee. Up until the past few months of this life Patrick Bowen was quiet active physically for a man of his age and he retained a remarkable memory until his death. His eyesight became very much impaired the last year, which prevented him from reading, but he was very greatly interested in the news of the world and, being typical of the faithful, friendly stock from the "Emerald Isle," he was until his last breath ever eager for news from Ireland. He possessed also a very keen sense of humor as well as a very substantial oral "shelaylee" for the younger set who would give him friendly taunts about his Irish. He made it plain to his friends that he not only stood up for the Irish but the democrats as well, of which political party he was a consistent member. He greatly enjoyed his trips to town with Mr. Murphy and visits and the friendly jibes to and from friends. No one enjoyed the acquaintance and friendship of Patrick Bowen in a greater degree than did the writer. Mr. Bowen would sympathize deeply with his friends in times of sorrow or misfortune and rejoice with them in their success and happiness.
