In 1890, President Benjamin Harrison, himself a Union veteran who fought in Georgia, signed the bill establishing the Chickamauga & Chattanooga National Park, Catoosa Springs, Georgia. Thus in 1899, the State of Georgia, erected the 87 foot high Confederate Soldiers of Georgia Monument to the memory of those lost in the Battle of Chickamauga, September 18 to 20, 1863.
