Married Mary Harriett Wilson, November 11, 1883 in Washington County, Missouri. In 1899, John and Harriett and four children, G.P.'Pink',Elizabeth, 'Tobe' and 'Eck', moved to what is now Winkler County, Texas, where he worked as a cowboy for his mother Elizabeth and his stepfather, Alex Birchfield, on their A-Anchor Ranch. In 1901, John M. Mitchell homestead land and established his own P-Ridge Ranch. His ranch brand was HA. The land homesteaded in 1899 is no longer owned by his descendants. However,most of his descendants do still own the mineral rights they inherited.
