There is a photograph of him in the book An Illustrated History of Southerners at War by Bell Irvin Wiley and Hirst D. Milhollen. He is shown sitting on the porch of a house surrounded by five members of this family. -Anonymous Added: Sep. 2, 2012 |

John Minor Botts was a lawyer, Virginia state legislator and three-term Whig representative in the U.S. Congress. A member of the Constitutional Union Party in 1860, he was arrested at his home in Richmond on March 2, 1862, and jailed under martial law for his Unionist positions. Botts was released on his parole two months later after taking an oath to say nothing "prejudicial to the Confederacy." Botts purchased the farm in Culpeper County and moved there with his family in January 1863. Their farm was repeatedly overrun by the opposing armies and Confederate and Union officers were frequent visitors. In 1866, Botts published "The Great Rebellion, its Secret History, Rise, Progress, and Disastrous Failure" to vindicate his political stance. -
