I grew up a Royals fan and was so in love with you. I was so proud when you talked about your problems; it just wasn't done then. And I remember what the fans at the other ballparks put you through because of it. You said if it helped someone else it was worth it. Meeting you was on my bucket list, and when I get to Heaven, I'll finally get to tell you in person how much you meant to so many of us. Love you.

Every boy has a hero on the baseball diamond. Mine of course was Darrell. I was just 12 when the 82 world series was played. Looking at all the players I couldn't decide on my favorite until they showed Deanne in the seats....I thought she was gorgeous and said "If Porter plays as good as he can pick a girl then he's my favorite." Lol...the thinking of a 12 yr old kid. So I became his biggest fan and I still think of him whenever I go to a game. You are missed! I pray Blessings on your family.

You would have given anyone the shirt off your back. When you gave me a hug, it was so sincere. When you would see me, the love and joy in your eyes was so sincere and unconditional. And I'll always remember when you and Aunt Deanne came to visit me in Booneville and our Bad News Bears misfit rehab team was getting slaughtered in a baseball game. All of a sudden you, Darrell Porter!!!!, showed up, played with us, and it was like magic. I believe we even won, but the feeling you gave every single person there is something we will all carry with us the rest of our lives. Thank you for everything. We will always love you and miss you.

Dear Mr. Porter:This is a very difficult note to write. First, back in the 70's you actually stopped to help my family on I70 when we broke down. I never realized that until my four brothers and I went toa Kansas City Royals game. I even asked my brother if that was you and they all said yes. Who else gave us tickets. They actually brought me down to the batter's circle so thatI could see you. I wanted to jump through the fence and hug you.But little did I know that you passed away. I served in military and to my astonishment I found out that you are nothere with us. I never knew until now. My heart grieves at the thought. Please know THAT you are someone that gave me the inspirationto do what I believe in and I did that. So thank you and may the Lord bless your children in every area of their livesKate

Mr. Porter, you were my childhood idol from the age of 6. You never put in a half hearted attempt while playing. You're death left a large hole in the hearts of those who watched you from KC through the Texas years. I met you once. You did not have any air of superiority. You took a genuine interest in a 12 year old girl at the time. You did not have time to sign my book that day at the game, but you were caring enough to take my book with you, copy of my address, and returned it to me with a lovely inscription. I still hold that book as one of my most treasured possessions and still read it. May God bless you and your family. You were human, but many of us love you inspite of your demons.
