Suggested edit: Waverly - Chester H. Ashbaugh, 64, of Waverly, died 12:50 p.m. Saturday at Memorial Hospital in Springfield. He was born Nov. 30, 1916, in Waverly, son of Fred and Elsie Austin Ashbaugh. He married Irene Gordon and she survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Charles (Linda) Williams of Jacksonville, and two sons, Craig of Springfield and Scott of Rhododendron, Ore. There are four grandchildren.
Three brothers, Austin Ashbaugh of St. Louis, Mo., Clyde Ashbaugh of Waverly and Merlyn Ashbaugh of Girard, also survive.
He was a veteran of World War II and post commander of the American Legion post. He was city alderman for several years, served on the Waverly police force over 20 years, was assistant fire chief and director of Civil Defense. He was on the boards of Passavant Hospital and Rogers Cemetery. He was a member of the Methodist Church, of which he had been a trustee several years.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Neece Funeral Home in Waverly. interment will be in Waverly Cemetery, where the American Legion will conduct graveside rites.
