Dr. Mary Lou Sackett-Penn May 12, 1949-March 20, 2011

Dr. Mary Lou Sackett-Penn died on Sunday, March 20, at Hillsdale Community Health Center of complications due to cancer. She was a resident of Hillsdale, was born in Ann Arbor on May 12, 1949, and spent her childhood in Dundee, MI.

A memorial service will be held at Unity Church, 3385 Miles Rd, Jackson, on Saturday, March 26, receiving at 1 PM, service at 2 PM, followed by a gathering at the fellowship hall. Her remains have been cremated and will be buried at a later date at London Township Cemetery.

Mary Lou attended Dundee Community Schools, received an associate of science degree from Monroe County Community College, and Doctor of Chiropractic degree from Palmer College in Davenport, Iowa. Recently, she studied website design at Jackson Community College. From 1980 until recently, she was a practicing chiropractor in Hillsdale. She also operated and taught at "Back to Basics Naturally" for the past few years.

She was a member of Unity Church of Jackson, a volunteer for the Woman's Life Insurance Society, and involved with many organizations and service groups over the years. She had a variety of interests, prime among them her family, and also health and well-being, raw vegan nutrition, family history and genealogy, spirituality, gardening, quilting, science fiction, space exploration, the music of Elvis Presley, and 1955-57 Thunderbirds.

She was a wedding officiant. She said that she became a chiropractor so she could help keep her family and friends healthy. Filled with sweetness and generosity, she loved and was loved by so many.

She is survived by her husband, Michael A. Penn; daughter, Samantha L. Sackett of Hillsdale; son, Terry Lee Knoll II and his wife Angie (Colwell) of Muskegon; brother, Lester L. "Jack" Sackett and his wife Virginia Jonas of Cambridge, MA; four grandchildren, Kara Knoll, Zachary Knoll, Michael Smith, and Kayla Smith; a great-grandchild, Lilly Hargrove; as well as step-children, Nicole (Black) Benson, Chad Black, and Jonathon Penn; her Uncle Shurley and Aunt Evelyn Sackett; step-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, other family members, and many dear friends.

Her mother, Helen B. (Miller) Sackett of Dundee; her father, Lester W. Sackett of Wolverine; sister, Virginia C. Roberts of Dundee, and an infant sister, Sally, preceded her in death.

In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Unity Church of Jackson, Hospice of Hillsdale County, The Planetary Society, or Hillsdale Community Health Center.
