Mildred S. Smiley, 103, a resident of Autumn Care of Shallotte, N.C., formerly of Roseland, died Monday at the home.

She was born in Spangler, daughter of the late Samuel W. and Bertha H. (Delaney) Ricketts. She married Leslie W. Smiley on Oct. 22, 1927, in Frugality, and he died Aug. 20, 1989.

Surviving are three children: Samuel L. of Manning, S.C., Camille B. Campbell of Kagawong, Ontario, Canada, and Sandra A. Reghetti of Carolina Shores, N.C.; six grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. She was lovingly known as Aunt Tommy.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Sara; a grandson, Barry Campbell; a granddaughter, Barbara Purvis; four brothers: Robert, John, Samuel and William; and two sisters: Dorothy Fowler and Kathryn Westrick.

Mildred was a 1926 graduate of Reade Township High School and had attended the Normal School at Indiana State Teachers College, Indiana, Pa., Juniata College, Huntingdon, and Penn State University, State College. She retired in 1972 from White Township Elementary School, where she had taught for 25 years. She also had taught in Glendale and Reade Township elementary schools.

Mildred was a member of Sodality and the Pennsylvania Association of School Retirees and was a past regent of the James Alexander Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, Madera. She was a member of the former St. Mary Magdalen Catholic Church, now St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, Frugality.

Friends will be received from 6 to 8 p.m. today at McQuown Funeral Home, Glasgow, where a vigil service will be held. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 19, 2011, at the funeral home, Father Sean Code officiating. Burial will be at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Glasgow.
