Age, 91, of Melvin, died Saturday, January 3, 2004, at his residence. Born May 8, 1912, in Floyd County, he was the son of the late Ellis and Dona Johnson Newsome. He was preceded in death by his wives, Lula Hall Newsome and Florence Johnson Newsome. Survivors include his caretaker: Vickie Collins of Melvin; 17 grandchildren, and many great-grandchildren. In addition to his parents and his first and second wife, he was preceded in death by his children: Tracy Johnson, Johnny Johnson, Jay Johnson, Pete Johnson, Onis Ray Johnson, Raymond Johnson, Parcie Slone, and Druch Collins; brothers and sisters, Dallas Newsome, Mae Newsome, Emitt Newsome, Johnny Newsome, Ernest Newsome, Beatrice Newsome, Goldie Jones, Sylvia Perry, Dixie Johnson, Mabel Newsome, Rosie Newsome, and Emma Newsome. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, January 6, at 1 p.m., at the Wheelwright Freewill Baptist Church, with Rev. Louis Ferrari officiating. Burial was in the Buckingham Cemetery, at Bevinsville, under the direction of Nelson-Frazier Funeral Home, Martin. Active pallbearers were family members and friends. Visitation was at the church.
