Miss Esther, coined in WY as the "Mother of Women's Suffrage," was imposing, standing nearly 6' tall and weighing around 180 lbs. On her first day as justice of the peace in South Pass City, she wore "a calico gown, worsted breakfast-shawl, green ribbons in her hair, and a green neck-tie." The rogues appearing before her in the 26 cases over which she presided during the next 8 1/2 months were exceedingly deferential.

The bio sketch continues the legend that Esther "worked for the attainment of suffrage in Wyoming." By "work," the story was that at a tea party, she asked her neighbor, Wm H. Bright, to introduce suffrage at the territorial legislature of 1869. He did--with the backing of the Territorial Secretary, Edward M. Lee--likely the major proponent. The tea party story was later refuted by Esther's son, Robert. Otherwise, there is no question that Esther was a prominent suffragist in national circles--subsequent to WY's act of 1869.
