Mary Ann Chiles was the mother of Benjamin Chiles and Washington Chiles. Their father was slave-owner John Moore Chiles of Starkville. Mary Ann was born into slavery and came to Mississippi with the white Chiles family from her native Greenville County, South Carolina in 1845. Emancipated along with her sons and grandchildren after the Civil War, Mary Ann remained in the Starkville area and lived with her older son Wash, a farmer. Her younger son Ben served in the Mississippi House of Representatives during the term 1874-76, as a Reconstruction lawmaker.
