Helen was the daughter of Thomas Edward McCaffrey and Isabella Anna Ryan. She married Lester James Gilroy about 1923. Together they had a daughter, Rosemary Ann in 1925. Lester was a physician and became ill with septicemia. He died April 2, 1928. Two years later, Helen remarried on June 24, 1930 to Ernest CHarles Herbert Kastner at St. Mary's Church in Pawtucket. Herbert and Helen had two daughters: Ann Marie, who died as an infant, and Helen Marie.
