MRS. M.E. DOTY, whose picture appears on page 119, is one of the pioneers of northern Burnett. She was born in Vermont in April, 1832. With her husband [ELIJAH ROBERT DOTY] she first settled at Taylors Falls, Minn., in 1863. They moved to the south line of Burnett county in 1865 and in 1871 went up to the Big Meadows and started a hotel for the passing lumbermen. Since the death of her husband she has lived in Grantsburg. She has seen this county in all stages of development and it has been her observation that at all times the man who was willing to work has prospered. She has six children living in this and other western states.

NOTE: In every U.S. Census, Mary is listed as having been born in CANADA, not Vermont. Also, according to her death records, Mary died in 1920, not 1921 as shown on her grave marker.
