Pvt. Edward Arthur James, Jr. was the son of Edward Arthur James, Sr. and Mary Ellen Wallace. He entered the U.S. Army in April 1941 and was assigned to the tank corps and sent to the Philippines in September 1941. He was taken prisoner by the Japanese army soon after landing and held as a POW for three years. He was among a group of 1,803 POW's killed in action while being transported from the islands. Their transport, Arisan Maru, was hit by torpedoes from an American submarine and sunk in the South China Sea on October 24, 1944.
