Father of all, we pray for those whom we love, but see no longer. grant them your peace; let light perpetual shine upon them.

She was always "Nanny" to me and was the kindest person I have ever known. She used to run an orphanage named Kennedy Home in Kinston, NC. I remember going there and staying with her when I was just a small boy. The girls there at the orphanage would look after me. There was a fountain there somewhere that I fell into. I thought I was going to be in a lot of trouble but she just dried me off and put on dry cloths. She didn't yell or anything. She lived with us for many years until she had a stroke in 1965. She went to live with her sister Ennis Ryman until she died. Nanny would always stick up for me when my Dad was being "not very nice". She dipped snuff and liked to drink a bit too much and always carried a jar around to spit in. The last time I saw her just before she died she could hardly speak and was bed-ridden. She said she loved me as best she could. I remember that the day of the funeral I was very upset because everyone seemed to have had too much to drink.
