John Alexander Baer was my great, great, grandfather. The header for his "Find-a-Grave Memorial" lists him as Pvt John Alexander Baer, when in fact, he served as the 1st Sergeant of Company A, 40th Indiana Infantry Regiment. This information can be verified from the "Biographical Record and Portrait Album of Tippecanoe County, Indiana" of 1888 on p. 763. He was captured at Kennesaw Mountain, GA on June 27, 1864 during Sherman's Campaign for Atlanta and was imprisoned at Andersonville, GA until his release on September 22, 1864. He subsequently returned to his unit and continued to serve as 1st sergeant until the expiration of his enlistment on December 3, 1864.
