W. A. Schultz, Longtime Citizen, Dies
Walter Schultz, 77, lifetime resident of Emmet County, died suddenly Tuesday [September 12, 1967] about 6 p.m. Mr. Schultz's death was attributed to a heart attack suffered just as he was about to enter his car.
He was born Nov. 28, 1889, on a farm five miles north of Estherville, the son of Charles and Mary Schultz. He received his education in the Emmet County schools and Estherville High School, and also attended the former Estherville Business College
Walter A. Schultz was married Oct. 16, 1912, to Mabel A. Markley and they became the parents of two children, Donald and Alice.
Mr. Schultz farmed until 1936, during which time he was a breeder of purebred Duroc hogs. For many years he showed his hogs at several county fairs. He and his family moved to Estherville in the spring of 1936.
From 1937 until 1950 he was in the real estate and insurance business, a partner of W. S. Clark.
Mrs. Schultz died Oct. 27, 1952. Later Mr. Schultz was married Nov. 27, 1954, to Inez M. Harris.
Mr. Schultz was a Certified F.H.A. appraiser. He was a member of the First Methodist Church, the Methodist Brotherhood Class, was a past Exalted Ruler of B.P.O. Elks of Estherville and past Chancellor Commander of the Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 14. He was a director of the Emmet Consolidated School for 12 years, serving as Emmet Township clerk for 17 years, and was a board member and trustee of the First Methodist Church.
Mr. Schultz is survived by his wife; his son, Donald W. Schultz of Des Moines; a daughter, Mrs. Roscoe (Alice) Hansen of Ruthven; six grandchildren; one sister, Mrs. Fred (Jessie) Grantham of Spirit Lake; five step-children and 12 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Schultz are to be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the First Methodist Church, Rev. C. R. Buckwalter officiating. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery.
Friends may call at the Fuhrman Funeral Home after noon Thursday until noon Friday when the body will be taken to the church to lie in state until time of service. (Estherville Daily News, Estherville, IA, September 13, 1967)
