Gladys M. (nee Thayer) Bunn, 87, of Winona passed away Monday, Dec. 6, 2010, at Saint Anne Extended Healthcare, Winona, where she had been a resident approximately three years.

Gladys Thayer was born in Garden Valley Township in Wisconsin on Dec. 13, 1922, the daughter of Eugene and Helen Thayer. She graduated from Alma Center High School in 1940 and then attended Winona Secretarial School. She started her employment with Merchants National Bank in January 1943. Her first duties were to operate the cord/plug-in type switchboard and hand out bank statements for $85 a month. She worked in the safe deposit box department and did secretarial work. She became the executive secretary and served four different bank presidents. In 1980, she was promoted to assistant vice president, the first female to achieve that title. She retired after 42 years in 1983.

She met Max Bunn, who also worked at the bank, and they were married May 11, 1965. They enjoyed traveling, golf, dancing and her many nieces and nephews. Max passed away in May 2010. She was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women's organization. She served as secretary of many committees and handled financial duties. She and Max delivered Meals on Wheels.

Gladys is survived by her sister, Virginia (Clay) Ruggles of Frontenac, Minn.; and her brother, Larry Thayer of Anaheim, Calif.; two sisters-in-law, Katherine Thayer of Temple Hills, Md., and Maxine Hiltner of Hollywood, Calif., and many loving nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and one brother.

A memorial celebration for Gladys will be 3:30 p.m. Saturday,

Dec. 11, at Norton Chapel, Central United Methodist Church, Winona, with the Rev. Justin Halbersma officiating. Interment will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Winona.

Visitation will begin at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the church.

Memorials are preferred to Central United Methodist, 114 West Broadway, Winona, MN 55987.
