Donald Pence, 60, passed away peacefully in his sleep November 29, 2010, in Salt Lake City, Utah, after a long and courageous battle against cancer.
Don set a great example of how to serve and love others with greatness. The most important thing to him were his family and friends.
Don was born in Ogden, Utah, to the late H. Delbert and Verlene Christiansen Pence. He grew up in Roy, Utah, and enjoyed band, wrestling, and trap shooting during high school and continued these activities while he attended Weber State College where he earned a Bachelor of Science in zoology.
Don joined the U.S. Navy in August 1973 after college. He served his country heroically for 20 years and retired as a lieutenant commander in October 1993. He was a helicopter pilot, and some of his assignments were the evacuation of Vietnam, search and rescue at Whidbey Island, flying foreign and domestic dignitaries, and Desert Storm.
At the time of his death he had been working for ICON Health and Fitness for 15 years, where he was a well-liked and highly respected supervisor in the RPS department.
Don married his wife of 34 years, Lynnette, in the Ogden LDS Temple. He treated his marriage with a special passion, faithfulness, and the same respect and hard work that were such a part of his life.
As an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served diligently in various callings, including Bishop, High Councilor, Young Men and Scouts. He touched many lives through his hard work and love. His dedication and faithfulness remained strong and true until the end.
Don enjoyed many activities including handball, racquetball, playing games, being outdoors, boating and spending lots of time with his family.
Don is survived by his wife, Lynnette, and his four children, Trisha, Ryan (Celise), Daniel (Marianne), Nathan (Sookmi); two grandchildren Emma and Seth; his mother, Verlene, and stepfather, Ray Hipwell; his siblings, Ray (Lauri), Vickie (Brent), Lynn (Nancy), Tim (Kathy); and many other loved ones.
Those who preceded him in death were his father, Delbert, and stepfather, Ronald Weaver, and many others.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 4, 2010, at noon, in the Providence LDS Chapel, 355 Canyon Road. Family and friends may call Friday, December 3, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Allen Hall Mortuary, 34 E. Center St., in Logan and at the church on Saturday from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Interment will be in the Providence Cemetery.
