Andrew Jackson Martin was one of at least nine children born to John W. and Matilda Martin. Andrew's father was born about 1803 in Tennessee, and his mother was born about 1804 in North Carolina . Andrew, "Andy," first appears on the 1850 Stewart county, Tennessee Census living with his parents and eight siblings. We believe all the children were born in Stewart County.
Andrew was born October 26, 1838. Martin Van Buren was President. General Winfield Scott and 7000 soldiers traveled to Georgia to expel the Cherokee Indians and transport them to their new home in Oklahoma the year that Andy was born. Andrew Jackson , whom our Andy was named after, had just finished two terms as President and had returned to the Hermitage in Nashville where he spent his final years.
The family lived on Standing rock Creek near George William Sexton‘s family. George was the son of Brittain Sexton who came to Stewart County from Wake County, North Carolina about 1795. Andy married Mary Frances Sexton daughter of George Sexton August 11, 1858, by Justice of the Peace, E.G. Sexton. Mary Frances, known as "Polly," was only 12 or 13 years old, Andrew was 19.
In the 1860 census Andrew and Mary were living nest to George Martin (Andy's brother) in the 12th Civil District of Stewart County, Tennessee. The census was taken July 24, 1860. Andy and Polly had been married almost two years. The year 1860 ended with Mary seven months pregnant with their first son, James Henry. She was 14 years old.
In the spring of 1861 the nation was headed to self destruction and hostilities broke out on April 12, 1861. Andy and his brothers and Polly's brother Reuben, enlisted November 28, 1861, in the Confederate Army. In February, Ulysses Simpson Grant arrived on the Tennessee River and captured Fort Henry and marched 12 miles to Fort Donelson on the Cumberland River. The winter had turned bitter cold , and the young men had only been in the army for two months, had been employed getting the fort ready, and had very little military training. Most of the men were sick when Fort Donelson surrendered February 16, 1862.
Brothers, James, William Francis, Jeremiah and Andy were shipped by river to Cairo, Illinois as prisoners of War. William Francis died at Camp Douglas on March 14, 1862, just a month after his capture. James and Andy were exchanged at Vicksburg, Mississippi, September 23, 1862, under Captain E.G. Sexton (Polly's cousin). The war finally ended. Tennessee was readmitted to the Union on July 24, 1866.
Andy and Polly were still in the 10rh District of Stewart County in 1880 but sometime during the winter of 1884-85, Andy moved his family to Henry County. The three older children James Henry, Mary Ella and Reuben stayed in Stewart County. Reuben owned a general merchandising store at Wynn and Andy kept an open account there until his death in 1900.

Andrew Jackson, "Andy," died January 23, 1900 in Old 23rd District of Henry County. He was buried in 23rd District Culpepper Cemetery. Andy and Polly attended the Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and when the TVA prepared to flood the Kentucky Lake, their bodies were moved to the church cemetery.
