They had eight children: Jane Carswell born July 1848 who never married, Grace born 1850 who later married James Hopkins, Mary Rankin born 1853 who later married Peter B. Grant, James born 1856, William R. born 1858, Hugh born Aug 1861, Helen born 1863 who later married Samuel Ambrose, Robert born Mar 1865 who never married.
