The family left Kentucky in December 1838, bound for Missouri. They stopped at Charleston, Illinois for the winter, then continued on in the spring to Adair County, Missouri, arriving in April 1839. William established a home in the forest, three miles below Sloans' Point on the west side of the Chariton River near the Salisbury School as he knew some people in this area. He lived only 15 months after arriving in Missouri and died on July 26, 1840. William was buried near where he lived in the Parcell Salisbury Cemetery.
William and Catherine had 10 known children:
