Ensign E. E. Severns, USNR, was designated Naval Aviator #6049 in 1939. Entered active service via the pre-war Aviation Cadet (AVCAD) program.

Ensign Severns died when his SOC-1 scouting aircraft, operating from the light cruiser U.S.S. DEROIT (CL-8), crashed into the Pacific Ocean off the southern California coast during fleet exercises. Neither the aircraft nor Severns body were recovered.
