Mrs. Alice Anson Dies at Her Home.
Well known Resident of City Passes Away Last Night.
Was Not Known that Her Condition Was Serious and Announcement of Death Was a Surprise.
Mrs. Alice Anson, one of the best known and most highly respected residents of Muscatine, passed away at her home on West Fourth street about 1:30 o’clock last evening. Mrs. Anson on account of her age had been ailing for some time but it was not thought that she was in a serious condition until several days ago. Many of her friends were unaware of her illness and the announcement of her sudden demise comes as a shock. Mrs. Anson was seventy-five of age and a faithful member of St. Matthias Catholic church.
She was a woman thoroughly wrapped up in her home, and children, though she found time to interest herself in many others, and possessed that rare quality of imparting that spirit of hopefulness that on many occasions resulted in driving out despair among those she sought to aid. Her life stands as a monument to a beautiful character, and with her death, passes a friend and an aid a large number had grown to love and to cherish.
Mrs. Anson was born December 16th, 1833, at Thurles, county of Tipperary, Ireland, and came to America in 1847, first settling in St. Louis. She remained there until 1852, when she removed to Muscatine. She was a sister of Michael Murphy, a prominent citizen of Muscatine who is perhaps well remembered by the older residents of this city. She was united in marriage to Michael Anson in 1854, and nine children were born to this union, seven of whom survive. They are: Frank P., Mary E., Alice P., Joe R., Mary M., Mrs. Elizabeth McNulty and Mrs. Margaret Stapleton.
The funeral wee be held from St. Matthias church Saturday morning at 9 o’clock, Father F.J.Leonard officiating.
