Retired Businessman, Carroll Bennett, Dies
Retired Great Falls businessman, Carroll R. Bennett, died Sunday evening at a local hospital after a short illness. He was 88.
Bennett, the founder of Bennett Motors, a Pontiac dealership now owned by his son, Richard C. Bennett, was in the automobile industry for more than 50 years and could trace his association with automobiles to the days of horseless carriages.
A Neihart native, Bennett had a life-long interest in the mining potential of the area. When auto distributorships were canceled during World War II, he managed successful zinc and lead mining enterprise on his parents' property in Neihart.
His parents had been settlers in the Neihart area; they moved to Great Falls in 1902. Bennett attended St. Mary's School, Great Falls High School, and the Great Falls Commercial College.
As a young man, he worked on the family homestead west of Ulm, worked on the construction of the Fairfield Irrigation Project, for the Pierse Auto Co. and for other auto dealerships. In 1929 he founded the Bennett Motors at the age of 33. During World War II he kept his hand in the auto business by selling used cars in Great Falls while also managing the mining operation at Neihart. He resumed the Pontiac in 1948. In 1955 Richard Bennett associated with him in the auto business.
Bennett and Josephine McNaught were married in January 1929 at St. Ann's cathedral.
He was a member of the Holy Family Parish, the Knights of Columbus, the Elks Lodge, Sons of the Pioneers, the Cascade Historical Society, the Great Falls Area Chamber of Commerce and was a fourth-degree Mason.
In addition to his wife and son in Great Falls, Bennett is survived by another son, Michael J. Bennett of Manila, the Philippines; three daughters, Mrs. Joanne Waldenberg of Great Falls, Sister Margaret Bennett of Davenport, Iowa, and Mrs. Mary Louise Gallagher of Pittsburgh, Pa.; 19 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Helen O'Brien of Seattle.
