Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General, US Congressman. At the start of the Civil War, he was a lawyer in practice, enlisted and was commissioned a Captian in the 2nd Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, in May 1861. In 1862, he was promoted Lieutenant Colonel and commanded a artillery unit in Virginia with the Army of the Potomac. Promoted Colonel of the 2nd Massachusetts in 1863, he saw action at the Peninsular Campaign, Antietam, Gettysburg the Wilderness, and the Siege of Petersburg. For leadership and devotion to duty, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on December 15, 1864. After the war, he was Mayor of Salem, Massachusetts from 1867 to 1869 and 1873 to 1874. He was a member of the State House of Representatives 1870, 1871 and 1881 to 1883, and served in the State Senate in 1885 and 1886. In 1887, he was elected as a Republican to first represent Massachusetts' 7th Congressional District, then it's 6th Congressional District, serving from 1887 until his death in office in 1895.
