Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. He was born in Cincinnati, Ohio where he lived until the Civil War began. He commanded the 50th Ohio Volunteer Infantry as Lieutenant Colonel during Major General William T. Sherman's Atlanta Campaign. The regiment was attached to the XXIII Corps of the Army of the Ohio. He was killed while leading his regiment at the Battle of Utoy Creek on August 8, 1864 near Atlanta, Georgia when he was 22 years old. He received a brevet promotion to Brigadier General of U. S. Volunteers on the same day that he was killed.
