Joann Newton Martin, 65, of 1675 North Brook School III Road, died Feb. 11, 2002. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday at Mt. Vernon Baptist Church where she was a member. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends tonight from 7 until 9 at Stamey Funeral Home.
Born in Cleveland County, she worked for Health Care Services until retirement.
Survivors include one son, Farris Jr. Martin of Vale; two daughters, Sandra Taylor and Lavinia Ann Martin, both of Vale; two brothers, Ralph Newton, and Edgar Jr. Newton, both of Valdese; six sisters, Ruby Swafford of Morganton, Ethel Moses, Sue Walker and Mary Buff, all of Casar, Sara Crawley of Vale, and Marie Spade of Cherryville; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
