You did well enough in the Civil War to earn a star, only to revert to the permanent rank of Major. And I believe you were assigned to the 7th Cavalry and served under a certain Lieutenant Colonel who was still a school boy when you were a serving officer in the Army (I believe you were a graduate of the class of 1846 at West Point). It must have been frustrating serving under "Longhair", and if life were fair, you would have had a longer tour of duty on this Earth in addition to higher regular army rank. You served your country faithfully Major Gibbs and I wish you well.
