Civil War Union Brigadier General. At the outbreak of Civil War, he was a law student but withdrew in October 1861, to accept a commission as a Lieutenant in the 58th Ohio Infantry. Promoted Captain in 1862, he served in the 43rd Ohio Infantry at the Battles of New Madrid, Iuka, Siege of Corinth and at the Union Garrison, Tennessee. In 1863, he served on the staff of General William S. Rosecrans and was promoted Colonel in command of the 111th US Colored Regiment. He led his brigade to victory at Huntsville and was captured near Athens, Alabama, in September, 1864. After his prisoner release in November 1864, he was commissioned Brigadier General, serving in Tennessee and northern Alabama till the close of the war. Declining a commission to the regular Army, he resigned in 1866, returned to law school and graduated in 1867. In 1869, he was elected as Attorney General of Tennessee and served until his death.
