The last rites for the Reverend Father Mathew A. Abrantes were celebrated with solemn High Mass in St John's Cathedral at Fresno on Tuesday. Father Abrantes, well known in both Kings and Tulare counties, was pastor of St; Anns Catholic Church at Riverdale and leaves many friends in this community.

Bom in Portugal in 1874, he came to the United States as a young priest about 1910; and remained for a period in Oakland, CA. with Father Henry Ferriera, C. S., pastor of St; Joseph's Church in that city. Later Father Abrantes was sent to Los Angeles, and from there to Guadalupe where he served for some time. Before coming to Lemoore, he was stationed at Bakersfield. He served eight years as pastor of St. Peters Church (Lemoore), going to Tulare in 1928 where he remained until 1940, before taking up his pastorate at Riverdale. Father Abrantes died on Friday, October 2, following a heart attack.

The Rosary was said at St. Peters Church last Sunday afternoon. Mass was celebrated for the repose of his soul at St. Anns in Riverdale last Monday morning. Funeral arrangements were in charge of the Phipps Mortuary.
