From 1937 until Sept., 1963, Murlin was a Naval Aviator. He flew PBY's - Catalina Airplanes and also PB4Y's, a four engine version of the PBY. He served two years on the USS Sicily Aircraft Carrier as a Ship Board Officer. In 1942, as a Lieutenant Commander, he landed his PBY in the Bermuda Triangle and rescued an Air Force Colonel who had ditched his B25 twin engine airplane in the ocean. The Colonel had been adrift on a rubber raft for several days before the rescue. For his bravery, Murlin received the Navy's "Air Medal". He continued to serve his country proud until he retired in 1963.
