Born in Eiken,Switzerland,Joseph(also spelled Josef)Anton Moesch.Emigrated to the United States in 1854 and settled in New York City,where he was as a clerk.When the Civil War began,he enlisted as a Sergeant in Company B,9th New York State Militia,which later became the 83rd New York Volunteer Infantry and nicknamed the "Swiss Rifles"In October 1861,he was promoted to Captain.Wounded at Fredericksburg at Marye Heights.Promoted to Lieutenant Colonel,he commanded his regiment at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg.Promoted to full Colonel in October 1863.
