William was the son of William Osborne Branen and Lucy Ann Hewett Tomlin. He was a veteran of the Civil War, enlisting at Greenbush, Iowa, as a Private on 7 July 1862 at the age of 18. William mustered in Co I 18th Iowa Infantry on 6 Aug 1862 and mustered out on 20 Jul 1865 at Little Rock, Arkansas.

William and Mary Bishop were married in 1865 in Marion County, Iowa.

William died in 1894 at the age 50 years 11 months.
