William Edward Cheatham, Sr. was born in Lynchburg, Va., to the late Courtney Cheatham and Lillie English. He was a student of the Lynchburg School System, attending Dunbar High School. He was also a member of the armed services, proudly serving as a Seaman in the United States Navy during World War II.
He accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized by the late Rev. C.T. Wilcher at the Betsaida Baptist Church, Newark, N.J.
He married the former Willa Lee Fortney on January 8, 1941 and they made their home in Belleville, N.J. after briefly residing on Hunterdon St., Newark, N.J. This union was blessed with 5 children: William E. Jr., Wilma Joyce, Julia, Sandra Ann, and Patricia Elaine.
In 1945 he joined and was ordained a Deacon at the Second Baptist Church, Belleville, N.J. under the pastorate of the late Rev. H.E. Goldston, helping in the construction and labor of their current edifice. He served faithfully as a Deacon there until 1978 when his membership was moved to the Messiah Baptist Church, East Orange, N.J. under the pastorate of Rev. Harry L. Batts. He worked faithfully as a Deacon until he became ill, ending 45 years as an active and committed Deacon. Please note that Deacon Cheatham, although advanced in age, helped with the installation of the stained glass windows in the Messiah Baptist Church.
He was a devoted husband and father and leaves to mourn, his loving wife Willa, of 50 years, one son William, Jr. of Newark, N.J., four daughters, Wilma Joyce and Patricia Elaine of Fanwood, N.J., Sandra Cheatham of Stirling, N.J., and Julia Kelly (David), of Irvington, N.J., seven grandchildren, Alisha R. Kelly, Tracy E. Kelly, Tiffany J. Grevious, David Kelly, Jr., Edward Cheatham, Brandon Cheatham, Terrance Cheatham, one sister, Mrs. Addie Porter of Newark, New Jersey, and a host of other relatives and friends. Deacon Cheatham's Homegoing Celebration was held on Saturday, March 2, 1991, 10:00 AM at Messiah Baptist Church, 13-17 Oak St., East Orange, N.J., Pastor Harry L. Batts officiating.
"And I heard a voice from heaven saying unto me, Write, Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord from henceforth: Yea, saith the Spirit, that they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."

Crossing the bar
Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,
But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.
Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;
For though from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crossed the bar.
