John J. Murray
A New Father Had a 'Zest for Life'
John Murray was a week shy of his 33rd birthday the day the Twin Towers tumbled.

He'd been bathing in the newfound glow of fatherhood for the past six months. And he was beginning to see the toil and sweat of 12-hour days blossom into a fruitful career brokering derivatives for Cantor Fitzgerald on the 104th floor of Tower One.

"John had a certain zest for life, living each day to the fullest and seldom getting caught up in the small stuff," said his wife, Rory.

Murray had been with the company since 1995. Before the Boston College alumnus joined the firm, he spent his summers as a lifeguard for the Town of Hempstead. He started his Wall Street career learning at several financial district firms. "He was happy to go to work every day," his wife said.

He played golf just as hard. He was equally at home on the greens as he was on the dance floor, his wife said. It was his fun-loving spirit that first caught her attention when they met seven years ago through a mutual friend. Two years ago they exchanged wedding vows. And 18 months later, with some coaching from him during the delivery, Alyson was born. His wife said their daughter brought out yet another side of her husband: the devoted dad. Despite his long work days, he was happy to change and feed her in the middle of the night, she said. "He embraced fatherhood."

Now it's as if she's in a "Twilight Zone," Rory said. And not finding her husband's body makes it even more surreal. "Aly is my saving grace," she said. "In her, all of us still have a part of John."
